Return on Private Forest Timber Production in Finland was 6.9% in 2025

The return on private forests’ timber production was 6.9% in 2025. The outcome was mainly affected by the slower increase in stumpage prices compared to the prior year. The impact of stumpage prices on the total return decreased to +2.4 percentage points in 2025. A significant share of the return continued to come from the value of the biological growth of the forest, which contributed +4.4 percentage points.

LUKE (Natural Resources Institute Finland) has announced that it will discontinue the Return on Private Forest Timber Production statistics (https://www.luke.fi/en/statistics/forestry-as-an-investment-statistics-discontinued/forestry-as-an-investment-2024). Indufor Oy has decided to continue calculating and regularly publishing the Return on Private Forest Timber Production Index. The index will continue to be based on LUKE’s data, but Indufor has updated the calculation method. The new method is based on the Montgomery–Vartia index, which allows the return to be decomposed into its components in a consistent manner.

As Finland’s forests account for roughly 20% of the EU’s wood market, the return calculation can be considered indicative more broadly as well. The index also reflects developments in the global market, which purchases over 70% of the output of Finland’s forest industry.
