Brent Matthies holds a DSc in Forest Economics and Marketing from the University of Helsinki (2016). He studied environmental impact accounting and valuation in climate and biodiversity finance and offset mechanisms in his dissertation. He is also MSc (Forest Economics and Market) from University of Helsinki (2013) and BSc (Forest Operations and Commerce) from University of British Columbia, Canada (2011). He holds a Master Certificate in Development Economics from the United Nations University and Responsible Investment Professional Certification (RIPC) designation from the Responsible Investment Association of Canada.
Brent has over 10 years’ experience in sustainability from research, finance and operational perspectives. His experience measuring Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) impact is drawn from working as a private equity Investment Manager focused on impact investments, consulting for International Financial Institutions (IFIs) and conducting high-value research around impact accounting and offsetting, as well as 7+ years’ operational experience in agriculture and forestry sectors. Together, that experience provides a total investment chain perspective on sustainability and impact. Through a range of projects, he has assessed ESG impact during due diligence, operational monitoring and closing evaluation project phases; engaging closely with IFI guidelines, including IFC Performance Standards and the Natural Capital Protocol, and emerging platforms, such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Global Impact Investing Network (GIIN). Brent has published nine peer-reviewed articles in leading environmental and economics journals related to these topics, and over 30 reports and presentations for public and private clients. He is currently an affiliated researcher at the Helsinki Institute for Sustainability Science (HELSUS) and consultant at Value in Impact. Brent has project experience from 11 countries across Europe, Asia, North America and Africa.
