Indufor to Carry out Forest Resource Assessment in Nepal

November 23, 2009

Indufor will provide technical assistance services to the Forest Resource Assessment in Nepal. The project will be implemented over a five-year period with a budget of 4.7 MEUR.

The Forest Resource Assessment project will improve the provision of forestry data and its processing for Nepal’s forest policy development and for forest sector decision-making. Updated, systematic data are needed for future climate change and reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD) projects as well. Technical assistance is directed to four components: 1) implementation of national forest resource assessment, 2) implementation of national forest cover mapping, 3) forest information system research and development, and 4) project management.

In addition to traditional forest inventory data, the project will provide information concerning forest carbon content, forest biodiversity, non-wood forest products, human and biotic pressure on forests, and soil characteristics.

Indufor is providing the technical assistance in collaboration with the Finnish Forest Research Institute Metla, Oy Arbonaut Ltd. of Finland, and Genesis Consultancy (P) Ltd. of Nepal.

The project is co-financed by the Nepalese and Finnish governments.
