Indufor will expand its assistance to the Government of Lao PDR in their efforts to reduce emissions from deforestation and/or forest degradation. The new project, “Carbon Assessment in the context of reducing emissions”, is part of the larger Biodiversity Corridor Conservation (BCC) project, financed by the Forest Investment Programme under the ADB Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) programme.
Indufor will assist the Government in assessing the potential to develop a carbon project in the BCC project area in the Champasak, Sekong and Attapeu Provinces. The activities include (i) analysis of the project’s carbon and emission reduction potential; (ii) assessment of the drivers of deforestation and forest degradation impacting the project area; (iii) identification and delineation of High Conservation Value Forest; (iv) developing and piloting a forest carbon monitoring system; and (v) conducting a preliminary assessment of the feasibility of the project areas to receive external support.
The feasibility study will investigate opportunities to obtain financing from the Green Climate Fund (GCF). If the assessment shows that a greenhouse gas emission reduction project is economically and financially feasible, the project will proceed to developing a proposal for submission to the GCF.
The project is implemented by the Department of Forestry of Lao PDR with Indufor’s support. The activities will be conducted over a period of 22 months divided into an assessment phase of about 12 months, and a project formulation phase of about 10 months. As several proposals for the Green Climate Fund are under preparation in Lao PDR, the activities will be planned and implemented in close co-operation with the government bodies coordinating activities related to climate change.
