Effective monitoring of forest loss and their associated carbon stocks is a critical part of understanding and mitigating the impacts of climate change, especially through reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries (REDD+).

One of the most frequently discussed REDD+ topics is Measurement, Reporting and Verification (MRV) of forest carbon stocks. The question is, how can we reliably account for the area (activity data) and associated forest carbon stocks (emission factors), including changes over time? This is a core challenge to qualify for performance-based payments and to allow UNFCCC national-level reporting.

Indufor is a global leader in this area, and has been long active in the design and development of national-level MRV programmes. We apply our expertise to develop robust methods and algorithms for monitoring deforestation and degradation, modelling future deforestation, and quantifying the accuracy of forest change estimates.

Indufor’s experts also participate actively in international discussions and regularly contribute to reviews of good practice guidelines and national MRV systems.
